John DeVore “Dee” Compton, III
Dee represents clients in Bankruptcy & Family law (Divorce, “legal separations”, Adoptions, and Name Changes), Probate Estates & Drafting Wills and Trusts, LLCs & Corporations, preparing Contracts, Leases and other transactional documents in Greenwood & Greenville, South Carolina and the surrounding areas. He also continues to handle Personal Injury & Wrongful Death cases, Worker’s Injury Cases, Consumer Litigation and General Civil and Criminal matters and DUI defense. Dee is the Trustee of the Estate of the Hon. George E. Maccaro, and makes regular investment and management decisions on behalf of the Trust.
A product of the Greenwood public school system, Dee graduated Greenwood High School in 1981. Dee graduated Lander College with a B.S. in Political Science (1986) and Mercer University Law School (1989).
Dee “hung a ‘Shingle'” (started his own law firm) after being admitted to practice in South Carolina in 1990. (He was also admitted to the Georgia Bar that year.) As a solo practitioner, Dee handled a variety of legal work, from arguing appeals before the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, to DUI defense, to preparing Wills, to closing Real Estate transactions, to litigating a variety of Civil Cases, thus developing a strong foundation in a broad variety of legal matters. Dee was joined in practice by Alecia Compton in 1994.
In addition to practicing law, Dee is a member of the South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the National Association of Consumer Advocates.
Dee is a member of Greenwood Lions Club, and has a long record of community service having served on many boards and committees. Dee is a past chairman on the S.C. Bar Consumer Law Section, and has spoken at CLEs on Consumer and Bankruptcy issues. He is the author of “Legal Brief’s”: a series articles on general legal topics, and has published Op-Eds on matters of interest in the Greenville News, The State, the Index Journal and other newspapers. Dee has also appeared many times on local talk radio to discuss matters of legal and political interest. Dee is a past member Greenwood City Council and served as Vice-Chairman of Greenwood County Council until 2008. Dee also served for two years as Chairman of a Greenwood County Political Party after he narrowly lost a bid for the State Senate in 2008.
In the past, Dee held adjunct faculty positions for Limestone, Wesleyan, Piedmont Technical, Lander and Erskine Colleges teaching Business Law, and also taught American Government at Piedmont Technical College, in addition to teaching the certification course for candidates appointed by the Governor as State Constables.
Dee is Currently Town attorney for McCormick, South Carolina. He also represents indigent clients on behalf of the South Carolina Office of Indigent Defense in DSS Abuse, Neglect and Termination of Parental Rights cases.
Dee is Admitted to Practice in all State & Federal Courts in South Carolina. He is also Admitted to Practice in the State Courts of Georgia, and the Federal Court for the Middle District of Georgia in Macon. Dee is Admitted to Practice before the Federal 4th and 11th Circuits Courts of Appeal and the United States Supreme Court.
Dee enjoys many outdoor activities especially running, hunting, investing and tree farming. He attends First Baptist Church in Greenwood, and Christ Church when in Greenville.
Dee acknowledges that most of his accomplishments and public life would not have been possible without the support of Alecia, by her taking care of their home and children, in addition to spending time practicing law with him.
Alecia T. Compton
Alecia practices Bankruptcy & Family law in Greenwood and the surrounding Counties of Upstate South Carolina, and prepares Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, in addition to handling a variety of other Civil matters. A product of the Spartanburg public school system, Alecia graduated Spartanburg High School in 1985. Alecia graduated cum laude from College of Charleston with a B.A. in Political Science (with a minor in African Studies) (1989) and the University of South Carolina School of Law (1992). Alecia was admitted to Practice in South Carolina in 1992, and began her career practicing in a general practice law firm in Laurens South Carolina. While there she was the lead lawyer to incorporate the town of Waterloo, SC.
In early 1993 Alecia became Associate Public Defender for the 8th Judicial Circuit, thus handling a wide variety of criminal matters on behalf of indigent criminal defendants. In October, 1994, Alecia joined Dee in practice with the Compton Law Firm, PA and is of counsel with the firm. Alecia is extremely well versed in Bankruptcy Law and has an unsurpassed understanding of the subject. She has assisted Dee with virtually all of his legal matters over time, thus she has a great depth of legal knowledge and experience and can help anyone with virtually any legal issue from Worker’s Injury cases to Civil and Criminal Litigation.
In addition to practicing law, Alecia is a member of multiple civic organizations, and volunteers a great amount of time with programs with Church of the Resurrection (Episcopal) and First Baptist Church, and with the Greenwood Community Theatre.
Alecia is admitted to all State and Federal Courts in the State of South Carolina. She is a member of the South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association.
Alecia and Dee are the parents of three children.
Alecia enjoys music and plays the cello. She is very active, loves exercise, the outdoors, hiking, and especially walking her beloved dog Rue.

They pride themselves on making themselves available to new clients quickly, and returning all client calls promptly (within one business day as a general rule). Regarding their Bankruptcy Practice, they handle Chapter 7 & 13 Consumer Cases, large Consumer Cases and Businesses in Chapter 11, and Family Farmer cases in Chapter 12. They are also well versed in a variety of Consumer Law matters.
