I travel through the intersection of Whitehorse Road at Augusta Road countless times. Since opening the branch office of the Compton Law Firm, PA in Greenville, South Carolina, though, I see wrecks at that intersection almost weekly. I expect to see either a wreck there, or a person pulled over by law enforcement for some reason.
Downtown Greenville, and the expansion of building County wide is exploding. More and more people are coming into Greenville and it’s creating traffic problems. In addition to Whitehorse and Augusta Roads, driving on Woodruff Road, Pelham Road, Haywood Road, Roper Mountain Road and others, especially at the wrong time of day, is not only frustrating, it is dangerous.
Fortunately, most of these roads have controlled intersections. For example, at Augusta and Whitehorse, there are left turn lanes with turn arrows to allow for quicker turning. Unfortunately, during rush hour, the length of the left turn lane is woefully short. Traffic hangs into the left lane of travel, causing congestion and delays. By the time drivers get to the intersection to turn left, they are irritated and many try to beat the light (look at the lights in the photo!). And this is how the accidents happen: most are t-bone accidents, from my observation. The shortness of turn lanes is a problem all over the County.
Please be patient, observant, wear your seatbelt, and drive defensively. It’s best for your safety, and the safety of others.
